Learning New Licks/Grooves/Techniques
Kaleb Britton recently did a response to my “Gospel Lick” video on Youtube that I posted two days ago. Why am I talking about this? In this video, Kaleb does exactly what every drummer should do with every single lick, groove, or technique that they learn. He displays taking something and making it your own and exploring the different sounds and ideas you come up with simply by changing placement of surfaces you are striking or varying a single limb. In this video you will see Kaleb 1. show the original lick & 2. move his right hand around to different surfaces.
Why should this be done with every new lick or technique? First it gets your muscles comfortable placing the new idea in different spots. Second, it gets your ear used to hearing the lick used on different surfaces so you are not just used to hearing it voiced a single way all the time. I will place his video below and remember it is a response to my recent drum lesson which I have posted in the last post. Watch them together to get the full idea of what I am trying to convey here.
